Arthur Edwin Mayes
January 23, 1933 – November 30, 2018

Arthur Edwin Mayes, 85, died on November 30, 2018, at the Clinton Gardens surrounded by family.    

Born on January 23, 1933, at home in rural Hillsdale, Indiana, he was the son of Austin and Grace (Swinford) Mayes.  

In 1951 Arthur graduated from Hillside High School and completed an agriculture short course at Purdue University in 1954.  From 1954 to 1957, he served in the United States Army stationed with the Arctic Test Branch in Big Delta, Alaska.  He was a member of the American Legion Post 263 in Cayuga, Indiana.

On June 3,1956, he married the love his life Arlene Pascoe. They raised two children: his daughter Margaret Ann and his son Albert Wayne.  

Arthur had a love for farming, community service, his church, and his family.  He farmed the fields of Helt’s Prairie for over 75 years.  He was a life-long member of Salem United Methodist Church, where he served as a Lay Leader and Sunday School teacher.  Arthur was also a dedicated member of 4-H and served as 4-H leader for many years.  

He was a former school bus driver for South Vermillion School Corporation, a former member of the Vermillion County Council, and served as a Summit Grove Precinct Committeeman.  He also served as president of the Helt’s Prairie Cemetery Association Board.  

He had a passion for soil and water conservation and was a former member and chairman of the Vermillion County Soil and Water Conservation District and member of the Sycamore Trails RC&D Committee.

Arthur will forever be known for his quick wit, hardworking ethic, his kind and compassionate spirit and for his love of God and community.  

He is preceded in death by his father, Austin Mayes, and his mother, Grace (Swinford) Mayes as well as his brothers Herman (Betty) Mayes and Harold (Jean) Mayes.  

He is survived by his wife Arlene (Pascoe) Mayes, his daughter Margaret (Raymond) Sockwell, and his son Albert (Kellie) Mayes.  Also surviving are his five grandchildren: Robert and Adam (Kaufman) Link, Sherry Kaye Link, Mandie (Cortney) Hawkins, Jerry (Heather) Steadman, and Laura (Peter) Kazmierowicz; and five great-grandchildren, Paige and Landyn Benskin, Kierstin, Sara, and Jackie Steadman, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.  

Visitation is scheduled on Tuesday, December 4th from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at Frist Funeral Home in Clinton. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. the following day, Wednesday December 5th, at Frist Funeral home.    

If friends desire, the family ask that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Salem United Methodist Church in Hillsdale, Indiana or the Helt’s Prairie Cemetery.  Envelopes available at Frist Funeral Home.
